After Care FAQs

Healing Basics...

Surface healing usually takes 2–3 weeks, but full healing (under the skin) can take 4–6 weeks.

Yes! Peeling and itching are part of the healing process. Just don’t pick or scratch.

Use ointment for the first 3–5 days (if you’re not using second skin), then switch to an unscented lotion until fully healed.

If You're Using Second Skin...

It’s a thin, breathable, waterproof bandage (like Saniderm or Derm Shield) that protects your tattoo while it begins healing.

Leave this shield on for a minimum of 4 days. After 4 days, you can remove the second skin.

That’s normal! It’s a mix of plasma, ink, and fluid. If it leaks or lifts, remove it and switch to traditional aftercare.

Remove under warm water. Peel slowly in the direction of hair growth to reduce discomfort.

Wash your tattoo gently and switch to a fragrance-free lotion 2–3 times a day until healed.

Washing & Moisturizing...

Gently wash 2–3 times a day with fragrance-free soap and lukewarm water (if not wearing second skin).

Use mild, unscented soap (like Dove or Dial) and fragrance-free lotion (like Lubriderm or Aveeno).

Aquaphor (in small amounts) is okay early on. Avoid Vaseline or thick oils—they can clog pores.

Things to Avoid...

Not until your tattoo is fully healed. Stick to showers only.

Avoid direct sun exposure during healing. After it’s healed, always apply sunscreen.

Light activity is fine. Avoid heavy sweating or tight rubbing until fully healed.

What If Something Feels Off?

A little redness and swelling is normal the first few days. If it worsens, contact your artist or a doctor.

Look out for pus, strong odor, excessive swelling, spreading redness, or fever. Seek medical help if you notice any of these.

Totally normal! It’s part of the healing process. Your tattoo will sharpen up once fully healed.

Long-Term Tattoo Care...

Moisturize regularly and always use SPF 30+ in the sun.

Possibly! Some fading is normal—touch-ups are usually quick and may be included in your artist’s policy.
